The exhibition, installed by the British film director Peter Greenaway, reproduces the atmosphere and essence of the Middle Ages in the Northern Netherlands. All kinds of special effects play an important role in the creation of this ambiance. One of the major themes of the Middle Ages and thus of the exhibition is the issue of life, death, future: hell or heaven?
The collection of valuable coins from Feerwerd, representations of saints, golden jewelry, the reliquary of Warffum, and the renowned manuscript of Emo van Huizinge form the basis of the exhibition. All these items originate from the Northern Netherlands, which enjoyed a period of unprecedented prosperity in the Middle Ages when the city of Groningen acquired a dominant position. Aduard, now a small village near Groningen, then accommodated the most important cloister of Northern Europe.
Why not visit the exhibition and enjoy the activities at the Groninger Museum? The exhibition is a part of the Via>Dorkwerd manifestation during which many special activities will take place along the Reitdiep water, which runs from the City of Groningen to the Wadden Zee.
