VIVE LE CINÉMA!
In celebration of 50 years of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) and 75 years of Eye Filmmuseum
Ever since the emergence of cinema, filmmakers have always experimented by venturing off the beaten track of the familiar narrative movie. As filmmakers and artists, they investigate the language and possibilities of the medium, sometimes resulting in innovative narrative cinema, or to intersections with other art disciplines.
Eye and the International Film Festival Rotterdam approached five major film directors from five continents for the jubilee exhibition Vive le cinéma!, thereby reflecting the power and diversity of world cinema. These filmmakers — Jia Zhang-ke (Asia), Lucrecia Martel (South America), Nanouk Leopold (Europe), Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese (Africa) and Carlos Reygadas (North America) — have each made a work specifically for the three-dimensional gallery space instead of the two-dimensional cinema screen, some of them for the first time.
